7-Day Vancouver Island Itinerary: Victoria to Ucluelet Loop

On Vancouver Island, the drive is half the brag.

7-Day Vancouver Island Itinerary: Victoria to Ucluelet Loop

If you want Vancouver Island to feel like an escape (not a scavenger hunt), this is the loop. It’s built around one smart decision: use Ucluelet as your wild-coast basecamp, then day-trip the best stuff without moving hotels every night.

My opinion: most people overpack this island. They try to “see it all,” and end up seeing a blur of gas stations. This plan keeps the magic intact.

Before You Go: The Two Rules

  • Rule #1: Don’t drive all day. Plan “drive + one major thing” per day.

  • Rule #2: Pick your basecamp. For the coast, Ucluelet is the calm, scenic win.

What This Week Feels Like

  • City charm + food in Victoria

  • Big trees and rainforest energy mid-island

  • Rugged coastline + Pacific Rim highlights

  • Optional Tofino day trip without the chaos

Day 1 — Arrive in Victoria (Settle In + Walk It Off)

Goal: Easy arrival day that still feels like you’re “in it.”

Do:

  • Check in, keep the schedule light

  • Take a waterfront walk (whatever route fits your vibe)

  • Have one solid dinner and go to bed early

Pro move: If you’re tired, don’t “push through.” Victoria is better when you’re not dragging.

Day 2 — Victoria: Culture + Coast + Cozy Food

Goal: Enjoy Victoria without turning it into a museum marathon.

Pick 2–3:

  • A historic area stroll

  • A garden or viewpoint

  • A harbor walk with coffee in hand

  • A casual pub meal (you’re on island time now)

Photo note: Morning light is your friend here—cleaner skies and fewer people in frame.

Day 3 — Drive Toward the Island Interior (Forests + Big Trees Day)

Goal: Break the drive west with something memorable.

Do:

  • Drive north and stop for a forest walk

  • Find a “big trees” vibe (you’ll know it when you see it)

  • End the day somewhere convenient for tomorrow’s coastal push

Don’t: Stack three “major” stops. The island distances are sneaky.

Day 4 — Drive to Ucluelet (Arrive + First Coast Hit)

Goal: Get to the wild edge, then immediately go touch the coastline.

Do:

  • Arrive in Ucluelet, check in

  • Hit the Wild Pacific Trail near golden hour

  • Dinner somewhere warm and simple

My take: Your first coast walk should be short and sweet. Save the “big day” for tomorrow.

Day 5 — Pacific Rim Day (One Beach + One Trail = Perfect)

Goal: A classic Pacific Rim day that doesn’t overcomplicate itself.

Morning:

  • Pick one major beach stop (arrive early if you want it to feel peaceful)

Midday:

  • Short trail / rainforest walk / viewpoint

Afternoon:

  • Back to Ucluelet for coffee, a nap, or a second shoreline walk

What to bring:

  • Rain shell, layers, water, snacks

  • Shoes you trust on wet ground

Day 6 — Choose Your Adventure: Tofino Day Trip OR Deep Ucluelet Day

Option A: Tofino Day Trip (Fun, Busier, Worth It Once)

  • Go early, park once, walk around

  • Grab lunch, do one beach, head back before you’re fried

Option B: Ucluelet “Do It Right” Day (My Favorite)

  • Time your morning around the tide

  • Do a second section of coastal trail

  • Slow down, take photos, actually enjoy the place

My opinion: If crowds annoy you, choose Option B and you’ll be happier.

Day 7 — Return Loop (Easy Drive + One Last Stop)

Goal: A clean exit day with one “final look” moment.

Do:

  • Drive back toward your departure area

  • Stop once for a short walk and a meal

  • Keep your timing generous (islands reward patience)

Lodging Strategy (Simple + Works)

  • 2–3 nights Victoria

  • 3 nights Ucluelet

  • 1 night mid-island (optional but helpful)

If you’d rather not change hotels much: do 2 nights Victoria + 4 nights Ucluelet and call it a win.

Common Mistakes (Avoid These and You’ll Feel Like a Genius)

  • Underestimating drive time (especially with stops)

  • Trying to “do Pacific Rim” in one frantic day

  • Skipping the coast walks because you’re tired (they’re the whole point)

  • Packing like it’s a warm, predictable beach trip (it’s not)

Wrap-Up

This loop gives you city + rainforest + coastline without the chaos. And Ucluelet as a basecamp keeps your trip feeling intentional instead of frantic.
